Why do you primarily Vote on Netscape stories?

September 27th, 2006

Netscape
I’m interested in why users vote on Netscape stories. Voting will raise the number next to the story, and therefore make it move “higher”, making it visible on the homepage. In addition it will be retained in your voting history on Netscape. Feel free to vote in the poll below.

There is only 24 hours a day and most will say they like the stories, or they are a news junkie. But in reality, most of the time when I was a member of Netscape a lot of the people on friends lists would just vote up on all of my stories. This included most of the Navigators and some anchors. So people don’t believe it, the reason most of the navigators stories reach the front page is because their friends are voting them up. While else do you think Jason’s video is on the front page of a social news site. A video on his dog is not news, but everyone of his friends voted it up to make it to the front page. Hell I something like 72 stories reach the front page and that it wasn’t because all of them were interesting. Engadgetscape has dropped from 208 to 359 on the alexa scale, and there is a reason for that. It also made Paul Scrivens top 10 bad web 2.0 companies list which to me was funny, especially in light of the crap that goes on at engadgetscape (netscape)

Shane - So what you’re saying is people are merely voting cause of their friends? I’m not sure, because the votes on my poll indicate otherwise.

However, I’m welcome to learn more of why you’re upset about Netscape. I found your stories of interest, and sorry to see ya go.

Feel free to email me (dygitaljoe at aol dot com) and let me know. :)

Some people are not exactly telling the truth on your poll. I’m always on AIM shanecoffey2 so if you want to talk thats cool. However the reason I left netscape is pretty much a dead issue isn’t it. Lifes to short to keep rehashing an argument that could have been avoided.

I guess my point it this, take one of my friends on netscape. He has been a member since June 15, 2006 has submitted over 411 stories, 148 have made it the front page. So thats 37% reaching the front page. That to me is says this, there are a lot of votes that some of those stories did not deserve. Point two, that same friend has been a member for 104 days and has voted on 8072 stories. Now if he worked 24 hours a day and we both know he doesn’t that would be about three stories he had supposededly read per hour, or about 78/stories per day that he has voted on. Even if he had done it 8 hours a day he would be doing 10 stories per hour. That does not include the comments they leave or the interaction with their friends on netscape, AIM, or e-mail. Not to mention that this person does work a full time job and does have a family. So tell me how in the world can this person in any way shape or form read 78 articles a day, vote on them, comment on them and have a life too. It does not happen, and this is one the folks who says he is a news junkie in the comments on that post on netscape. Anywho it does not matter and it does not affect me at all, I just call bullshit when I see it.

I agree totally with Shane. 40% of the stories on the main page should not be there. Voted up there by friends. I have submitted a few stories but none ever got more than a few votes. They were interesting but since I do not have all the friends to vote them up there they never made it. This site is nothing more than a popularity contest. I also agree with A C Holte
