S.P.,

Paid anti-virus software is dead. Not just the business, I mean the whole industry. It's only a matter of time until Trend Micro, McAfee and Symantec all hold hands.

Free anti-virus software has been proven repeatedly to be much more effective at removing viruses, trojans and worms.

I suspect free AV scanners are much better because of the large sample of users they can collect samples and identify viruses in the wild much quicker for proper inoculation.

I stand by Avira, Avast!, and AVG. They are light-weight and incredibly effective. My parents run AVG and I haven't been summoned for a virus housecall in over three years.

Anyone can compare the top anti-virus software with additional data at AV Comparatives: http://www.av-comparatives.org/

I would never dissuade people from applying common-sense, in being wary of opening attachments from senders they don't know (or expect). It's kind of like once you get air-bags, you just run red lights knowing that you can survive -- not a wise idea.

Thanks for commenting. :)

With free adware and spyware blockers, and free firewalls, do you also advocate spending money for a virus-scan program? If so, do you recommend Norton over McAfee? Or is there a free alternative out there that is any good? Or is being careful about attachments in mail messages enough? Thanks for your thoughts.
