In the open-source world, one of the champions, OpenOffice, has been updated to 3.0. OpenOffice has been improved to be more user-friendly and now runs natively runs on the Mac, which means it’s faster.

The demand for the new version has brought down servers operated by Sun Microsystems (you know, the same company who makes Java). Currently, prospective downloaders are provided a generic download page on OpenOffice’s Web site.

The 3.0 version will run much faster for Mac users, which is always a big win. In addition, the user interface is improved so people can use the office suite much more effectively. The Extension Manager is easier to use so users can enjoy free third-party addons. It’s now even easier to create charts across the family of productivity applications.

I recommend everyone have a copy of OpenOffice on their computer so they can always rely on that in the event Microsoft Office no longer works — especially for those folks who are on their OEM 30-day Office trial.

Download OpenOffice 3.0, below. Be patient as there is currently a strong demand for this version:

I have one frustration with OpenOffice/Sun, they aren’t taking advantage of BitTorrent. Perhaps their servers won’t be so overburdened if they could rely on thousands of users to share it. Ubuntu offers BitTorrent downloads, why shouldn’t OpenOffice? If you want, you can seed this Torrent and you might have a faster download speed.
