They absolutly hold your pictures for ransom, no cheap ransom either!

You're like the other half of my blog lately, Joe - I love it! I don't sign into AOL for anything if I can help it (even if I use AIM chat it's through Digsby, so I sign in through a third-party client, not through an AOL app) so I had no idea until right now that AOL is offering the simple "download" option for pictures hosted by them. Will update my related post accordingly to point to your instructions and screen shots - thanks for this post.

@Bubba
I suggest clearing your Web browser's cache and cookies, restart your computer and try again. This often causes the invalid ZIP files. In addition, I recommend using Mozilla Firefox for the process.

Re: PhotoWorks - I stand firm on my belief they CAN and WILL hold your photos hostage in exchange for a fee or a subscription. This is not very Web 2.0, and is essentially a failed business model.

@Mike
Thanks, Mike. If you want, you can catch me on Yahoo as JVManna or joemanna AT gmail.com on GTalk. Personally, I'm ridding my AOL dependency, something we all should be doing so these product shutdowns don't affect us. :-)

BTW, Nice blog. Keep it up. :-)

The only photos I have on my account are OLD screenshots of (now obsolete) software. Mainly from beta (AOL Spyware Protection, the first builds of Triton, AOL OpenRide, etc). Oh well... not like it's that important.

Nice post Joe. Hope to catch up with ya on AIM soon. :-)

Just a cautionary note: Rarely (for me) does "download" generate a valid .zip file.

I recommend transferring to a Photoworks account. One can then download the original images from there (I believe; I haven't tried it except for a few pictures which seemed to work).

Also, it took quite some time (2 weeks or so) before my full-resolution images showed up in my Photoworks account (800px version appeared promptly).
