Dear Joe:

I have AOL Canada, and simply put their Customer Service via e-mail is almost non-existent, i.e. they either refer you to a their telephone help (the feedback people), or just do not answer. (Canadahelp@aol.com people).

I am a paying customer, and at present I do not suffer from the Footer you are referring to, but I suffer from something much, much, much worse. I don't know when it started, but I know I did not have it before. I like AOL, and have used it as going over my ISP rather than making it my ISP, the reason being that at the time I started they did not have DSL or Broadband in Montreal. Having said that, my problem is driving me crazy such that I cannot write a serious long mail without being interrupted, sometimes with a blast, from a pop-up. The window that says Mail, has another window at the bottom with changing ads , then something will pop-up. This happens with Read, Old, Send, Manage etc. As well, when I am writing a letter. This is the most annoying because my concentration flows out the window, I like to have a clear page without monkeys flying around, or women trying on bras.

I also noted that when they offered free AOL mail, my IM changed to AIM, which irritated me tremendously, but they said this is the way it is with all. Considering the in-ept staff I have had to deal with, who unfortunately ruin the reputation of the good ones I am not sure if this is so or not. I just don't have 100% faith in what they tell me.. I even got paranoid in my last attempts to contact them, that perhaps they have blocked me ever since I told them what I thought of AOL customer service. As I said, I feel bad for the good ones I have had to deal with, but the proportion of bad to good has been so high that bad regins!.

Amazingly, this problem does not exist with Webmail!

So Joe, are you aware of this problem? If so, any ideas on how to solve it? May be I am wording my search wrong because my search did not reveal any results to help me. I googled: I have ad window at the bottom of my AOL Mail, and got the Footer inside the mail problem.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you

Layla

You could always avoid the ads footer if you used a 3rd party client (e.g., Thunderbird or Outlook) with IMAP. This is a better experience in my opinion anyway--even better than Gmail which has periodic micro-outages.

I was lucky enough to eliminate the ads by following the prescribed method. I'm on AOL via Time Warner Cable.
But now ... how do I get rid of that ad banner that appears to be permanently attached to the bottom of my Mail Window? It adds even more clutter to the window. HELP !!!!!!!!

Thank you, john

AOL WILL CHARGE YOU! Well, I followed the advice above by adding a credit card and changing my plan to a paid one. The account then allowed me to go to keyword: footer and remove the advertising footers from each screen name. Then, I immediately changed my plan back to a free one all in a matter of minutes. Unfortunately, when I checked the status of the free account, it said the change was pending (it was waiting for the end of the billing cycle before changing back to free). Then I noticed they had a Current Balance listed there; it was a pro-rated amount because the paid account was activated mid-month. There was also a mention of a Charged React Fee but I'm not sure what that was. So, I contacted customer service and asked them to remove it but they wouldn't and said there was nothing they could do. Lies! It appears their billing cycles end around the 28th of the month (check this)and that is when they bill you. If you do the free/pay/back-to-free change mentioned above, I would suggest doing it on the 27th so that the pro-rated charges are minimal. However, this still does not excuse AOL for their intrusive, involuntary footer advertising which gives free members no choice but the above remedy to remove it and then charge you for it! Those fees should not have been billed in the first place. Such a scam! AOL is a scam! Then to make matters worse, not even credit my account out of courtesy. So much for being a loyal customer. Way to go AOL!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble uninstalling AOL. I'll probably have a detailed AOL uninstall guide soon; but in the mean time, check out Marah Marie's Anti-AOL Blog. She has spent many hours putting together helpful guides and FAQs on uninstalling AOL. More information is available here: http://anti-aol.livejournal.com/tag/how-to:+remove+aol

Best of luck!

After trying everything I could think of to cancel AOL 9.1 popup in lower rt. corner, I loaded 9.1. It has done nothing but slow everything down and lose all my email files saved on my PC. In addition I had to pay $11.95 for tech support because of problems installing. I want it uninstalled, but not if I have to put up with the 9.1 popup again. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info. I was able to disable the footer using the url posted above. The weird thing is that I had already unchecked the box through the settings when logged onto webmail, but would still get the footer. I tried your url and low and behold..the box was checked...I unchecked and sent emails to my other accounts...no Mapquest advertisements in the footer. Thanks again!
