I tend to use these applications daily and recommend them. I will add more software here as I use it.

  • Web Browsing
    • Firefox – Fast open source Web browser.
    • Opera – A decent, but less-common Web browser.
    • Safari – Another browser that Macs have, now for PC & Windows.
    • Google Chrome – While not for the privacy advocate, Chrome does perform well as an alternative browser.
    • Adblock Plus (for Firefox) – Ideal way to block and prevent ads from showing during your browsing. Must have!
  • Email
    • Thunderbird – Slick email client from the creators of Firefox.
  • Instant Messaging
    • Pidgin – Multi-protocol IM Client. Supports all the major and minor IM networks. Runs smooth and fast and has helpful plugins including encryption.
    • Adium (Mac) – Great alternative to iChat for Mac. Supports multiple networks and looks slick.
  • Archiving
    • 7-zip – High-compression multi-format archiving utility.
  • FTP
    • FileZilla – Probably one of the best FTP clients.
  • Multimedia
    • WinAmp – Open of the longest running MP3 (and other formats) Players to date!
    • iTunes – Apple’s infamous music and video player. (Will install Quicktime)
    • foobar2000 – Alternative, high-performance audio player.
  • DVD/CD Burning
    • CDBurnerXP – A great, user-friendly CD burning program. Goodbye, Roxio!
    • ImgBurn — Another quality image (disc) burner for Windows.
  • Office/Productivity
    • OpenOffice- A full-featured “Office” suite that supports Microsoft Office files and PDF output as well.
    • Notepad++ – Powerful alternative to Microsoft Notepad.
    • Komodo Edit - Great IDE for developers who code.
    • NeoOffice (Mac) – Great alternative office suite built for mac, adapted from Open-Office.
  • Anti-Virus
    • AVG Free – A leading free anti-virus software. (You don’t need to upgrade at all.)
    • Avast! – Another great anti-virus software that performs well. Requires registration to get free reg code.
    • Sophos Anti-Rootkit – Reputable scanner for rootkits on Windows (direct download).
  • Anti-Spyware & Privacy
    • Spybot Search and Destroy – A Very good anti-spyware application that has tools to manage exactly what runs on your computer.
    • Hijack This! – A reporting tool that shows you details about where spyware and privacy risks can reside. (Power users only!)
    • MBAM – Excellent tool to triage and identify immediate spyware risks. (Trial)
    • CCleaner – Great app to help clear all the temporary/cache files and manage privacy on your computer.
    • Tor – If you want to browse the Web anonymously, but slow, Tor is what you need.
    • PeerBlock – Block known IP ranges from accessing your computer. P2P, Ads, Government, etc.
  • DVD Archiving
    • DVD Shrink – A wonderful tool for DVD archiving/backup.
    • Handbrake – Great app to handle video conversion.
  • Images & Graphics
    • Ifran View – A popular free Image viewer and manipulator.
    • Jing Project – Free app to make short screencasts and screenshots.
    • Skitch (Mac) – Cool screencap app for Mac users, competes with Jing.
  • Graphic Design
    • GIMP – An open-source graphics design application to help you if you don’t have Photoshop.
  • Audio Manipulation
    • Audacity – Simple but powerful audio editing tool.
  • System Information
    • CPU-Z – Gives details about your CPU and RAM settings.
    • Belarc Advisor – Popular app to give you a report on the all the info about your machine and OS.
    • SuperPI – CPU stress test to aid in burn-in and reliability testing.
  • File Sharing
    • uTorrent – The most powerful BitTorrent client known to man.
    • FrostWire – Great alternative to “Limewire”, operates on the Gnutella network.
    • Dropbox – While not exactly file-sharing, it’s file backup and you can manage a public folder for people to access files free.
