Times have changed at AOL, especially when it comes to providing complimentary security software to their users. Whether it’s a identity or branding crisis; it’s clear AOL no longer intends to uphold their image of the safest and securest online destination on the Web.
It surely can’t be the cost of the McAfee co-branded affinity partnership; it has to deal with the maintenance over the technical issues surrounding the AOL-McAfee implementation. Besides, why offer it free if you can guilt users into upgrading and catching a nice affiliate kickback for it. The affiliate profit margin alone could fund a fully-functioning call center aimed to service and support users’ questions and concerns.
In an e-mail sent to AOL users who received the AOL-McAfee Security Suite, AOL informs them that their ‘subscriptions’ to McAfee will not be renewed. This is legitimate and should cause concern for everyone who uses an AOL-McAfee product (not to mention their children and computer consultants). You do not have to upgrade. You can choose an alternative, better and faster anti-virus!
There are several free alternatives for anti-virus protections. I can not emphasize enough that you only want to have ONE anti-virus solution because having multiple anti-virus solutions will cause more harm, system slowness and vulnerabilities. Always be sure to completely uninstall your previous anti-virus before installing one of the ones below. Here are recommended anti-virus suites which will keep your computer safe and secure from viruses:
- AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition — This is likely the most popular free anti-virus suite. AVG is very quick, effective and has been completely renovated to support Windows Vista and offers advanced rootkit detection.
- Avira AntiVir Free — Another popular free anti-virus suite which offers advanced heuristics and frequently updated definition files. It has a very light footprint, and I recommend this for more pro-computer users.
- Avast Home Edition — Another decent anti-virus suite, originally intended to truly modularize anti-virus detection modules; it was unique but now a frequently copied format among AV vendors.
After you uninstall McAfee, it’s recommended to run the McAfee Product Removal (MCPR) application to ensure that no residual files and startup applications remain. If you have Norton, you should use the Symantec-Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT).

I got that email from AOL except after printing it out I am searching for it — didn’t find out my expiration yet — can I get some help from you in installing one of those you mentioned?
Will I be getting an email response later?, maybe.
LW,
Basically the expiration on AOL McAfee products are one year from the installation date. When a McAfee product expires, it will turn black and will no longer function until you renew with McAfee directly.
I strongly urge you to be sure you completely uninstall your McAfee software BEFORE installing one of the software suites that I suggested.
I recommend AVG, it’s the best well-rounded easy to use anti-virus programs. And it’s free.
Best of luck, let me know how it goes.

My McAfee was aurimatically updates to 11/8/2019. Has thgis happened to others? Can I transfer to other compuier??
I am supposed to get McAfee with my Paid subscription to AOL but every time I go to hit download it send me directly to AOL’s home page. Is there anything I can do to get this to work properly without having to contact AOL who keeps you on hold forever?
Thank you.
This only concerns free AOL users. Paid members will continue to have complimentary McAfee security available.

I have paid AOL though I haven’t used it in a while and the expiration for the McAfee SecurityCenter AOL edition should be 2014. How does McAfee compare to these other anti-viral suites? What about this Conficker that’s supposed to activate tomorrow? I’ve checked for updates and am now scanning my computer. Hopefully I get a response tonight…
aol mcafee suite lasted 2 weeks, screwed up and slowed down my broadband to a crawl.Deleted it today now my computor is back to normal!
I have the free McAfee suite from AOL. Everyday when I turn on my computer it starts downloading what it says is “downloading antivirus x% complete” Why would it download everyday and it still says my computer is not fully covered. So I open the security center and click on fix it. It runs a little green line for a while and then tells me an error occured and it can’t fix it, part of mcAfee is missing and needs to be reinstalled. I sure as hell didn't get a notice and as a result got hit by cornflicker. I am finding more fault with AOL When sending a news blog I Get the message ERROR INCORRECT CAPTCHA. I understand tha AOL bought SPHERE and since that I have been having problems. AOL is about to lose my account unless they resolve this difficulty

I've only just received one of these emails and it suggests that I've already agreed to the new security passage, saying that the £2.99 (or whatever) will start with my next billing.
Odd.
