AOL to Pay $1.25 Million Fine

August 24th, 2005

AOL

America Online Inc. agreed to pay a $1.25 million fine and change its practice of discouraging consumers from canceling service, after New York Attorney General Eliot L. Spitzer started an investigation into the company’s behavior.

Just great. Whiny New Yorkers who are the rudest people on earth getting $95.60 in their pockets. I do agree AOL did have very sneaky and downright fraudulent practices pre-2003.

Rap Drama Dre vs. Simmons

August 24th, 2005

I was bored, and I was talking with Rachel about 50 cent, and crap. I explained I followed Interscope records, and well I’d figure I made a pic of the relations and crap. I think rap drama is funny and lame, but it sells CD’s and gets them their Hummers and shit. lol

Ah, pwned. Jason Smathers

August 17th, 2005

AOL, America Online Spam
Ex-AOL Employee, Jason Smathers got owned by a judge for selling 92 Mil. accounts to an “online marketer” (spammer). 15 Months in prison after he wrote a ‘moving’ letter to the judge.

Background: Jason used an exploit on the internal network for the customer service program (maybe its mystical…?). Anyhow, he dumped all the screennames and sold them. He sold it for $28,000. AOL is suing him for damages, $300,000, and the judge added that it should be $84,000 to America Online.

CNN/Money Article

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former America Online employee was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Wednesday for stealing 92 million e-mail screen names from the Internet company and selling them to a “spammer.”

Jason Smathers, 25, pleaded guilty in February in federal court in Manhattan to charges including conspiracy and interstate trafficking of stolen property. He was paid $28,000 by an Internet marketer for the names, which were taken from AOL’s database of 30 million subscribers at the time. AOL subscribers can have multiple screen names for each account.

Tongue Piercing

August 10th, 2005

After some thought, I figured I’m going to get my tongue pierced. I was intrigued by Rachel’s jewelry, and we talked about it and I think a tongue would be pretty cool. I’ll update afterwards. I’m a little anxious since its my first piercing, but I trust her and she’s cool about things.

Update 10:44PM -
So I got it peirced on my tongue. I was calm about it though since Rachel was there she just got her eyebrow done and didn’t even flinch and it was so quick, that gave me relief. So anyhow, we get started and just prep stuff and the tattoo artist is really cool and was nice, and just one step at a time, and he did my tongue. It hurt just a bit, but not as bad as I thought. I did well, and Rachel was very cool and coaxed me along. It was like 5 minutes, really nice; $41 and a little tip. Well we go back and Rachel prefaced how the rush of adreline will come and hit you and you get light headed. I didn’t feel it that much until I was staring at the wall (I have this weird thing with depth perception and weird thing my brain does…) so I felt lightheaded, then just relaxed a bit and I felt better - at least I thought I was. So we’re out there, Rachel again reiterates the fact ‘am I okay to drive’; luckily she wanted to smoke a cigarette. I was like cool, just chilling there. Then I hear her say “are you ok?” I realize my hesitation and I replied “yeah I’m — fine”, realizing my knees are bent I look around for a plane to level myself against. Then I was like losing balance- blacking out and luckily she was there to help me not fall. Then I just relaxed a bit, still mentally there, just the spots and stuff were slowly fading away. Anyhow, we then relaxed in the car I was going to let her drive, but she didnt want herself too, she has an issue with driving, fear, and inexperience. Which I was like okay, well whatever, lets just relax for a bit. She tried to call her aunt for a ride or something - but it didnt pan out, but after relaxing with the A/C I was good, then we went back to her place for a bit.

I will see about getting pics up a bit. but it looks good, and proportional, I’m satisfied with it, and its a very liberating feeling. I may not get another piercing anywhere else though. Next plan - tattoo. Later on though. I dont want to keep doing stuff to my body. :D

3 day weekend

August 9th, 2005

Powered by Rockstar Energy DrinkI gave myself a 3-day weekend. I wanted to get a few things accomplished like websites and stuff and advance phases on my tucsonLAN project. Well, I didn’t. Though, I’m not disappointed, since I’ve been spending my spare time with Rachel. She’s has leet written all over her, almost literally - she has a binary tattoo “alithium”. Anyhow…

I’m tired, sleepless nights to blame, but ah whatever. She’s helping me prepare to become a team lead (using generic talk for call center supervisors that customers talk to, though we call them CSS). I’m good at talking to people, and I think with the proper skills and ideaology I can nail it with her help.

Just waiting for the job posting. In the meantime I’m trying to get all my calls perfect by my department’s standards so they can check them all and be like “Joe really own3d”.

BOYCOTT IE7!

August 2nd, 2005

Anti IE 7

(Orginal Article…)
Paul Thurrott is boycotting IE7 for its inconsistent standards approach, and does not plan for including latest approved W3C standards. He lists his feedback on it. In case you didn’t know, this guy is an über beta tester for Microsoft products for many years and usually has praises for Microsoft. Its nice to see he’s sensible.

Boycott Internet Exlorer 7!
Use a Standards-Compliant browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

…Microsoft blames backward-compatibility problems for the stalemate over true Web standards compatibility. Put succinctly, the company has gone its own way for so long and now has to support so many developers who use nonstandard Web technologies that it will be impossible to make IE Web-standards-compliant without breaking half the commercial Web sites on the planet. Furthermore, by halting all IE development for several years before reconstituting the IE team to create IE 7.0, Microsoft has set back Web development by an immeasurable amount of time.

My advice is simple: Boycott IE. It’s a cancer on the Web that must be stopped. IE isn’t secure and isn’t standards-compliant, which makes it unworkable both for end users and Web content creators. Because of their user bases, however, Web developers are hamstrung into developing for IE at the expense of established standards that work well in all other browsers. You can turn the tide by demanding more from Microsoft and by using a better alternative Web browser. I recommend and use Mozilla Firefox, but Apple Safari (Macintosh only) and Opera 8 are both worth considering as well…
